How to Play GO
Players take turns placing black and white stones on the intersections of the board.
- GO supports 9×9, 13×13 and 19×19 boards.
- Connected stones of the same colour form a group and share liberties.
- Surround an opposing stone or group so it has no liberties remaining to capture it.
- Moves must follow the game's legal-move, capture and repetition rules.
- Players may pass when they do not wish to place another stone. When play ends, the board is scored to determine the result.
Board Sizes & Controls
Choose the board that fits the kind of match you want to play. Smaller boards are faster and more tactical; larger boards create more room for long-term strategy.
- 9×9: straightforward touch controls with the full board visible.
- 13×13: full-board play with optional zoom where available.
- 19×19: pinch to zoom and drag to pan for precise play.
- On 19×19, placement confirmation helps reduce accidental moves on crowded intersections.
AI Opponents
GO includes six personality-driven CPU opponents: Sensei, Scholar, Warrior, Fox, Monk and Master.
Each approaches the board differently, from patient and instructional play to aggressive fighting, misdirection, defence and advanced endgame play. Additional opponents become available as you progress.
Challenge Mode & Progression
Challenge Mode teaches and tests Go concepts through board problems covering captures, liberties, ladders, life & death, connections, cuts, Ko, tesuji, territory, endgame and more.
Completing challenge blocks can unlock backgrounds, boards, stone sets and access to AI matches. Defeat an AI opponent when their challenge becomes available to add that opponent permanently to your selectable roster.
The Keeper may appear throughout your journey with observations, hints and the occasional reminder to look at the board from a different angle.
Hints & Rewarded Ads
If a Challenge Mode position has you stuck, eligible hints may be available. GO can offer optional rewarded ads in exchange for additional help.
Rewarded ads are optional. If an ad is unavailable, check your internet connection and try again later. Availability can vary by device, region and network conditions.
Local Two-Player
Local play lets two people share the same device and play a standard game of Go together.
No online connection is required for a local match. Choose the board size and available match options, then pass the device between turns.
Online Play & Rankings
GO is designed to support head-to-head 1 vs 1 online play, including quick, ranked and private matches as those services are enabled in the released version.
Competitive features use GO’s Firebase-backed online services. If matchmaking, rankings or results do not update, check your connection, return to the main screen and reopen the online area.
Boards, Backgrounds & Stones
GO includes a collection of visual environments, board designs and custom stone sets. Many are earned through Challenge Mode and continued play.
If an item is locked, check the requirement shown in the progression or collection area. Some of GO's rarest rewards are intentionally tied to special accomplishments.
Sound, Characters & Zen Play
GO uses character dialogue, board sounds and Keeper commentary to give matches atmosphere without overwhelming play.
Use the in-game audio settings to adjust available sound and character options. Silent or Zen-style play can be used when you prefer a quieter board.
If audio unexpectedly stops, confirm your device volume and game audio settings, then fully close and reopen GO.
Progress or Unlock Not Updating
Return to the main game screen and reopen Challenge Mode or the Collection area. If the displayed progress still has not updated, fully close GO and launch it again.
When contacting support about missing progress, include the challenge, opponent or reward name and what happened immediately before the issue appeared.
Troubleshooting
If GO is not behaving as expected, try these basic steps first:
- Fully close and reopen the app.
- Confirm your device is running a supported version of iOS.
- Check your internet connection for online, ranking or advertising features.
- Install the latest GO update when one is available.
- If a 19×19 board view becomes awkward, reset the board zoom and position.
Report a Problem
When reporting a problem, a few details can help us reproduce it faster:
- Your iPhone or iPad model.
- Your iOS version.
- Your GO app version.
- The board size and game mode you were using.
- What happened immediately before the problem occurred.
- A screenshot, if it helps show the issue.
